Why do Muslims Celebrate Eid ul Azha?
Eid ul Azha is also called the greater Eid and this festival which occurs on the 10th of Zill Hajj and lasts for three days. The joyous festival honors The Prophet Ibrahim AS, when he was ready to willingly sacrifice his son Ismail AS following the orders of Allah SWT. In replacement for his son Allah SWT gave him a ram before he could have sacrifice his son, and thus today Muslims all around the world slaughter animals at this occasion. It is very hard for Muslims especially children to sacrifice their beloved animals even after just spending a week or fortnight with them, and this event also teaches Muslims to be ready for sacrifice for the happiness of the creator and following the legacy of Prophet Ibrahim AS. The family which sacrifices the animal keeps one third of the meat, another one third is usually given to relatives and the last one third is given to the needy and the poor.
A Couple of Weeks before Eid
Before the days of Eid ul Azha, adults and children both spend time with their animals, feeding them, and caring for them. Children are very passionate about animals and they also take their animals for walks or show them to their fellow friends. Many people share photos of their animals with their family and friends.
The Sacrifice
After the Eid prayer Muslims greet each other with “Eid Mubarak”. Animals such as sheep, lamb, camel, goats, or cows are sacrificed on this occasion after the Eid Prayer, in the morning. Muslims can also sacrifice a portion of an animal such as of a cow or camel. On this day Muslims greet each other, give each other gifts, visit their relatives, friends and family, and share the sacrificed animal’s meat with them and Muslims also give meat to those who are poverty stricken. Eid ul Azha is indeed an amazing occasion where people are able to bond with their animals before the days of Eid and then enjoy and savor the meat after the sacrifice, while sharing it with family and friends.
Delectable Cuisines and Dishes
After sacrifice and division of the meat people cook the meat and make mouthwatering dishes and cuisines, and therefore the aroma of sizzling meat wafts out of every home these days. People cook numerous dishes such as Nihari, kaleji, Pai, kormas, karahis, kebabs, koftas (a type of meatball),Alu gosht, haleem, mincemeat with mashed or slices of potato, most importantly biryanis and several other appetizing cuisines.
Smoking Hot Barbeque Nights
It is also very common for people to have Barbecue nights or parties in which they invite relatives and friends to their home and make Barbeques, usually at night time. The smell of barbeque cannot possibly be explained in words, it is very tempting and lures everyone near to the fireplace and nobody can resist the urge when it is finally off the flame. It is also a treat to watch the flames lick the meat and transform it into steaming Barbeque.
The leather Industry
On Eid Muslims also donate the skin of their animal to the needy people after the qurbani. Those people then subsequently sell the skin to the leather industry which is a big industry of Pakistan and helps in industrial growth significantly.
Butchers with their Shiny Knives
Some days before Eid it is common to see butchers sharpening their knives in preparation for Eid as they are the ones who usually sacrifice the meat for people and cut its meat. Therefore the sound of knives sharpening and their glint can be seen and heard in the markets.
Economic Growth
Eid ul azha not only benefits Muslims spiritually but it is also an event where the country goes through economic growth, as people buy animals, from farmers and herders who get money, people buy the feed for animals which amounts to increase in income of cultivators who grow them and that of sellers too, as these are widely sold around this time. Butchers also get involved in Eid and are able to make money by doing the sacrifice for people. Eid also leads to growth of the leather industry as Muslims donate their skins which boosts the industry and culminates in overall economic and financial growth for the country and Eid also creates jobs for people simultaneously, such as people hiring security guards for the safety of their animals to prevent any theft or robbery of them.
